CPAC Meeting Minutes   ---  November 2008

On November 11, 2008, twenty (20) representatives from the business and residential community in 231’s radio beat, city and state departments and four (4) representatives from Metro Patrol Division met for the one hundred and fifty-eighth (over 13 years!) Community Police Action Cooperative (C.P.A.C.) meeting. The meeting lasted from 4:00 to 5:00pm.

The meeting opened with introductions.  There were no special announcements.

Sgt. Pearce presented the October crime statistics.  There were 3 robberies: Addie Rose in Brookside (shoplifting gone bad); at a residence in the 7600 block of Jarboe; and Walgreen’s (attempted purse snatching).  There were 7 non-residential burglaries although some included garages in residential areas and 15 residential.  The 29 stealings included 7 stolen auto parts, 2 bike, 9 stealings from autos, 5 stealings from buildings, 5 shopliftings, and 2 other.  There were 6 auto thefts- 2 of which had keys in the vehicles, 2 were recovered, and 1 was a recovery tow.

Waldo Heights Apartments:  Alan Waterman, a security consultant hired by the owners of Waldo Heights, was present at the meeting.  He gave an overview of his goals and objectives for the housing.  The number one effort is gaining control of the property by more evictions, more security, etc.  He has requested additional funds from the ownership to be able to make the needed improvements.  It is getting better but there are still major problems as were attested to by the residents present at the meeting.  He was invited to attend the Rockhill Manor Neighborhood meetings and they were invited to contact him whenever needed.  We talked again about pulling together all of the apartment managers/owners in the area to discuss concerns and efforts.

Community Reports:

Brookside:  In October there were some shopliftings and panhandling activities along with a burglary at Paper Warehouse.  There are similar burglaries going on in the neighborhood.

Morningside:  Sharon reported that campaign signs were stolen.  Area residents have been alert and good about contacting the police.

No reports from Armour, Oak Meyer, Here’s Waldo, or Tower

Ward Parkway Estates:  A question about crime reports was raised.  They would like the residents to be aware of problems.  They are encouraged to visit www.crimereports.com.

Waldo Homes:  Dowe Harris presented some information about a company that makes steel cages for outside air conditioning units.  There have been quite a few stealings of the units throughout the city.

THE MAIN MESSAGE FROM THE MEETING WAS TO LOCK CAR DOORS AND HIDE VALUABLES!  GPS devices, phones, etc. are being stolen from cars daily!

There was no further business brought forward at this time, and the meeting was adjourned. The next C.P.A.C. meeting is scheduled for December 9, Tuesday at 4:00 pm. The meeting will be held at the Southtown Planning Center at 6814 Troost. Please continue to network with other C.P.A.C. members, and residents, to encourage their attendance.
