CPAC Meeting Minutes

NEXT MEETING DATE: TUESDAY, April 14, 2009 @ 4 PM

On March 10, 2009, fifteen (15) representatives from the business and residential community in 231’s radio beat, city and state departments, and three (3) representatives from Metro Patrol Division met for the one hundred and sixty first Community Police Action Cooperative (CPAC) meeting.  The meeting lasted from 4-5pm.

After introductions, PO Aaron McKie gave an update on the recent meeting held with Apartment Owners/Managers to establish a communication network between each other to insure good tenants and to address the “moving crime” problem as one complex is cleaned up and the problem moves on to another complex.  It was a very good meeting and future meetings are scheduled. Sgt. Pearce reviewed the February crime statistics.  There were 2 robberies: an attempted car jacking at 6811 Pennsylvania and at Walgreen’s at 75th and Wornall.

There were 19 residential burglaries.  Front panes of doors were being broken to gain access in a number of cases.  The police are actively looking for a black male about 5’7” driving a tan/gray small 4-door car who appears to be watching people leave their homes and then breaking in.  There is also someone else driving a green Cadillac that appears to be burglarizing homes.  The Police did arrest Brian Vaughn again for recent burglaries.  The thieves are taking big screen TV’s, laptops, cameras and other electronic items.

There were 2 stolen vehicles.  There were 30 stealings: 3 auto parts. 16 from auto, 7 shoplifting, 2 from building, and 2 other.  Sgt. Pearce also reported that they are monitoring Tower Park more and are enforcing the hours, parking, etc.

TIPS:  Be sure to record the serial numbers of your electronic items, i.e. TV’s, stereos, etc.  The police have been relatively successful in returning items if there is proper identification on the goods.

Neighborhood Reports:

Tower Homes- The neighborhood is working with the city on cleaning up the park signage and striping the parking lines.

Armour Hills- Nothing to report.

Brookside- There were a number of shopliftings and a few panhandlers during the month.

Rockhill Gardens- No report.

Waldo-  Rev. Freese reported they are having an increase in the number of beggars at the church.  It was recommended that they connect with the Metropolitan Assistance Center to coordinate assistance and verify needs of the clients.

Waldo Homes- There had been a problem with vehicle stickers being stolen.

Here’s Waldo- Eula reported on a scam where she received a bogus check from UPS.  She took it to the bank to verify that it was fake.  Two days later, she received an email asking if she received the check and wanting the money.  BEWARE!

Ward Parkway- One the neighborhood association board members was a victim of a burglary when he left his garage door open.  The organization is working on developing block watches and looking into security services.

Ward Parkway Estates- No report.

Morningside-  Nothing to report but Sharon Cheers noted that Citibank cards are being reissued due to ID theft issues.

Other news:  Rev. Freese reported that Academy Lafayette would be using space at Broadway United Methodist Church this fall for their kindergarten classes.

Sgt. Pearce has been actively addressing the problem of people asking for donations on the corners at 85th and Wornall on the weekends.

There was no further business and meeting was adjourned.  The next CPAC meeting is Tuesday, April 14, 4pm at the Southtown Planning Center 6814 Troost Ave.  Please continue to network with other CPAC members and residents to encourage their participation.
