CPAC Meeting Minutes
NEXT MEETING DATE: Tuesday July 14, 2009 at 4 PM at the Southtown Planning Center, 6814 Troost Ave.
On June 9, 2009, fourteen (14) representatives from the business and residential community in 231’s radio beat, city and state departments and two (2) representatives from Metro Patrol Division met for the one hundred and sixty third Community Police Action Cooperative (CPAC) meeting. The meeting lasted from 4-5pm.
The meeting opened with a report on a recent court hearing of a burglar that had been reeking havoc on the neighborhood. Thanks to over 80 area residents showing up at the hearing along with the Prosecutor and the evidence, the Judge ruled that he should stay in jail until the hearing in October. We also talked about the Annual Police Picnic. It was suggested that we forego it again this year. An alternative would be for neighborhoods to provide baked goods at different times of the year. We will continue to ponder this!
Sgt. Pearce provided the May stats: There were 3 robberies: Pampered Paws (robber was caught with stolen items), Kentucky Fried Chicken, 85th and Wornall- 3 suspects with a rifle, and someone sleeping outside reported a bike and cell phone were taken. There were 16 burglaries, of which 2 were commercial. KC Vet Clinic had an attempted break-in and the AT&T office at 8021 State Line had an attempt but no loss. There were a few incidences where people were home and the burglar knocked. When there was no response, the burglar went into the homes. WARNING: Turn on a light, say something, or at least do something to let them know you are home! Captain Houston noted that they are seeing more break-ins to the east in vacant homes. There were only 2 stolen autos- one was recovered and the other was an attempt. There were 43 stealings: 8 stealing from other, 10 stealing auto parts, 9 stealing from auto, 8 shoplifting, and 8 stealing from buildings. We discussed a recent armed robbery at 7/11 where the owner came out with a gun and the suspects ran.
Neighborhood Reports:
Armour Hills- Concern was raised about vandalism to a fountain at 67th and Wornall. They are also concerned with speeding cars and running of stop signs around Rockhill and Main.
Morningside- Sharon reported that Wine has applied for a “serve & sell” license. The Star Motors building is being changed over to new usage. The neighborhood recently cleaned up the gateway at 59th and Brookside.
Ward Parkway- They have had 2 Block Watch meetings with John Trainor. Movie in the Park is scheduled for July 3 at Hale Cook.
Here’s Waldo- They have problems with people not stopping at stop signs as well.
Waldo: Rev. Freese extended thanks to the Police for the extra watch on vagrants around the church property.
Ward Parkway Estates- Target has requested a liquor license. There have been a number of issues with homeless people in the area.
Waldo Homes- New officers were elected. Dowe reported they have attended some of the COMBAT meetings. Questions were raised about a vacant home. It was suggested they contact 311.
Brookside: There are plenty of petitions at the grocery stores. There were a number of shopliftings at Price Chopper, an employee’s purse stolen at Party Warehouse, and a few other minor incidences.
We talked about an up-coming neighborhood event, June 25th at 99th and Holmes.
There was no further business and meeting
was adjourned. The next CPAC meeting is Tuesday, July 14,
4pm at the Southtown Planning Center, 6814 Troost Ave.
Please continue to network with other CPAC members and residents
to encourage their participation.
